CAROLE RYAVEC
Screenwriter / Documentary Filmmaker

Carole Ryavec
BIOGRAPHY
Born to a Slovenian-American family, Ryavec has dual nationality. Originally trained as a historian, with a PhD in Japanese medieval legal history, and later working in investment banking, Ryavec worked in Tokyo and other markets for over twenty years. Before studying screenwriting at NYU, she held various financial positions, including chief price negotiator for central contracts at New York City's Department of Education.
Scripts
Carole is an award winning screenwriter (Venus Retrograde, Redcoats on the Hudson, Chef’s Special, Embargo, and Dark Pools, among others). Many of her stories emerge from her rapidly changing experiences in different home and career situations.
Growing up in a military family meant attending 13 different schools before college. One location, early on in her life, made a huge mark on memory - the foothills of the Sierra mountain range. Tulare Basin developed from my love of Noir, my interest in resource depletion and my childhood memories of watching the ever-changing, majestic Sierra Mountains from below at China Lake in the Mojave Desert.
Her experiences working in international financial markets led to several stories, including REKT, Dark Pools, and Greeners. The Greeners action comedy and all the financial world narratives deal with stresses that occur in an economic environment frequently called “late stage capitalism”. How does everyone do better when only a few have all the power to make (or break) the rules?
Documentaries
Ryavec explored her Slovenian family’s history directing the feature doc Letters from Slovenia, and a short doc The Abandoned Art of Charcoal Burning.
